Product Description

STEM toys do not get any better than this! Thames & Kosmos brings terrific building sets for kids who are interested in engineering or like to build models of the real world things. This 287 pieces set is a dream toy for such kids, because the toy allows them to perform 20 experiments with really awesome structures. Do you ever wonder how bridges span huge distances and how skyscrapers stay standing? Structural engineers use physics and their knowledge of the properties of building materials and geometric shapes to design structures with sufficient strength and stability. With this Educational Toys Planet's kit of modular building pieces, you can learn the basics of structural engineering by conducting a series of 20 model-building experiments. Each model demonstrates a basic principle of mechanical physics or structural engineering in a hands-on way. Start out with small models that demonstrate how structural elements can be attached together to maximize the strength of a structure for a fixed amount of material used. Learn about basic structural elements including columns, beams, trusses, plates, arches, shells, and catenary. Explore the forces acting on structural components including tension, compression, shear, and bending. Move onto building more complex models of trusses, roofs, and small buildings. Experiment with different types of bridge construction: a truss bridge, arch bridge, cantilever bridge, rope bridge, and suspension bridge. Finally, build models of towering skyscrapers. What is the tallest tower you can build using only the pieces included in the kit? Learn about the strength and stiffness of materials. See how structural engineers optimize factors to maximize safety, and minimize cost and the risk of structural failure. Structural Engineering Bridges & Skyscrapers Science Kit comes complete with 287 parts and a 36-page, full-color manual that guides you through model building with step-by-step illustrated instructions.

  2. Positive Ratings: 4.1 of 5
  1. Rating: 4 Grandson loves it by By A customer Grandson says he loves it.
  2. Rating: 5 Trusted brand by By A customer Now I may not have bought it but my friend has this kit, I showed him Thames & Kosmos and he is obsessed. I have many of their kits and plan to buy more. Their kits always contain tools needed to remove pieces if necessary.
  3. Rating: 5 amazing resource! by By A customer great product from a great company! some of the other review complaints were true but the problems were easily adjusted for. For example, it is true the anchoring pins were difficult to remove (they need to be so the structure won't fall!). BUUUUUUTTTTT guess what????? Tah-dah! a little pliers for the garage and PROBLEM SOLVED. Another person complained the text of the manual was too small for old eyes. I had the same problem, but fortunately i have invested a fortune in a incredibly expensive rocket science tool: READING GLASSES!!!! (humor in case you thought I was serious). Please support this company THEY ARE TOTALLY THE BEST THING TO HIT STEM EDUCATION!!!!
  4. Rating: 5 Bridges and skyscrapers by By A customer I am giving this book to a teenager interested in engineering.
  5. Rating: 4 Four Stars by By A customer interesting toys for development of technical aptitude
  6. Rating: 5 He loved it. by By A customer Bought for my grandsons 7th birthdays loved it,,he is a engineer.
  7. Rating: 4 Excellent learning tool for kids by By A customer Great way for kids to learn how to build stronger structures. The book has good building activities and information. We use this to supplement a robotics summer camp.
  8. Rating: 5 cool set for your builder by By A customer I am not sold that these are better than say legos, but these are a nice structured set for those little ones that like to have a directed task. I see this set working really well in a STEM camp or an after school organization / club. Great examples and ideas.
  9. Rating: 2 Stings are difficult to incorporate! by By A customer My son loves building and spends hours doing so. I purchased this item to continue his interest and this was a huge disappointment. My 9 yr old struggled to get through a project on this and after days of trying he gave he gave up...that was a first for me to see! He never gives up....The strings are difficult to incorporate and can become very frustrating. This review was written with the intent that the creator makes some modification to the product for ease of use.
  10. Rating: 2 Frustrating to take the anchor pins out by By A customer Unfortunately this toy is not an enjoyable one for my child. Once you make one structure, it is not easy to take anchor pins out to make the next one. When I get one interesting toy, my child usually plays with it all day by himself but this one only frustrated him. It comes with so many small parts but there’s no container you can keep. Now I see that all these 5 star reviews are from ones who received it for free.
